Cavanaugh

I felt out of sorts today.

I hated lying to Elowen, and I swore I would never hurt her that way, but it seemed I was breaking a lot of my promises this summer.

She’s my daughter, and I wanted to tell her that I was falling for someone, because under any other circumstances she’d be happy for me.

But this felt different.

How was I supposed to tell the one person I loved more than anything that I was not only attracted to, but falling for her best friend? A woman the exact same age as her.

“Dad, what’s wrong?” she asked me from the rock she was sitting on.

We’d hiked up the mountain to have our annual father daughter day. Each year, Tae and I made sure to spend a full day alone with our girls during the camping trips we all took together.

“What do you mean?” For a second, I’d forgotten just how perspective El was to my moods. I needed to be better about that until I was able to tell her about Sailor and me.

She sighed, looking at me long and hard after she put her sandwich down. “You look like there’s something on your mind,” she said, her brows furrowed with worry.

Fuck. Too perceptive.

“I’m just lost in my head, sweetheart. Don’t worry about me. Today is about us,” I said, shaking all thoughts of Sailor from my mind. It wasn’t fair to El not to have all of my focus today.

“You know you can tell me anything, right?” she asked, still watching me closely.

I knew I could. I just didn’t think I was ready to say anything just yet, and I knew Sailor wasn’t because if we told Elowen, we would also have to tell Tae.

“I know, and I will when I’m ready.” I smiled at her, looking over the cliff at the beautiful view.

“Okay,” she whispered, sounding a little sad, and it broke me a little inside.

“I’m okay.” I wanted to reassure her. “How are you feeling about this being your last year of college before you graduate?” I asked, knowing she was excited for what was to come.

“Honestly?” she asked, and I nodded. “Stressed and terrified.”

“What? Why?” I asked worriedly.

“I don’t like change. School is all I’ve known most of my life. In less than a year, everything is about to change and I don’t know how to process that,” she said with a shrug.

I knew what she meant. She hated change more than almost anything else, but she handled it a lot better than anyone else I knew. She would do amazing things with her life.

“I could tell you a million different ways just how incredible you’ll be when you enter the workforce, but I know you won’t let it absorb right now, so I will say this instead.” I waited until she was looking into my eyes before I continued. “You’re the bravest, strongest, and most practical human being I have ever met, El. Whatever you face, you always come out the other side because you’re brilliant.
